Preparations begin for fallen aircrew memorial

As airmen in Kyrgyzstan paid their final respects to three fallen Fairchild aviators Thursday, the remains of those personnel killed in a KC-135 tanker crash are on their way back to the United States.

The bodies of Captains Mark "Tyler" Voss and Victoria "Tori" Pinckney along with Tech Sergeant Herman "Tre" Mackey will be returning to the United States, touching down at Dover Air Force Base. All three are likely aboard a C-17 heading for Dover, although right now only the family of Captain Pinckney has agreed to allow the media to witness her arrival and dignified transfer.

Volunteer airmen practice twice a week for their duty as carriers and will move Pinckney from her aircraft to a military hearse that will take her on to the Dover mortuary.

If any of the aircrew's family wishes to attend the transfer they can overnight at a special residence called the Fisher Home. Tech Sergeant Latersa Frazier at Dover AFB helps grieving loved ones get through the ordeal.

Kyra Wine defies the odds

Kyra Wine defies the odds

In 2008, three-year-old Kyra Wine became the victim of the worst case of child abuse in Benewah County history, her injuries so severe doctor's amputated her feet. Now, five years later, she's an active, happy eight-year-old girl.

The abuse Kyra and her sister Amanda endured is heartbreaking and unimaginable but now they are thriving.

"Every birthday, yeah, every birthday is special," Kyra's grandma, Deanna Wine said.

For her eighth birthday, Kyra didn't ask for anything special.

"I just let them get whatever they want," Kyra said.

Making the gifts on her grandma's kitchen table an even bigger surprise; a birthday is always a big deal when you're a kid, but when you're Kyra, each candle carries more than a wish. They're a symbol of survival, a light of hope.

"When this all happened with Kyra the doctors said that basically she had hours," Deanna said. "If she hadn't been taken to the hospital she had just hours to live."

On June 17, 2008 Benewah County Sheriff's deputies responded to a home for a welfare check on Kyra, then three-years-old, and her six-year-old sister Amanda. They couldn't have found them any sooner.

Defense, prosecutors trade barbs in Starbuck opening arguments

Opening statements got underway Thursday for Clay Starbuck, who is suspected of killing his ex-wife Chanin in her Deer Park home.

Prosecutors revealed Thursday that Chanin Starbuck was bruised from head to toe and may have been tortured before she was found in bed two days after she was strangled to death. They added during their opening statements that she had been ambushed by her jealous ex-husband and that he was so angry that she started seeing other men, that he degraded her with sex toys after her death.

It was the first time prosecutors accused Starbuck of torturing his ex-wife. The medical examiner thinks Chanin may have been alive for up two hours before her lungs finally filled with fluid.

"She'll also testify that in addition to the bruises and contusions, Miss Starbuck, on her breast area had appeared to be a burn mark from potentially a taser. There were also other areas on her body that had those same type of burn marks," Deputy Prosecutor Larry Steinmetz said.

ZAGiving allows students to donate unwanted items as school ends

Gonzaga University has partnered with PODS of Spokane to give new life to unwanted items as students leave campus for the summer.

ZAGiving encourages students to donated their unwanted apartment and dorm room items rather than throwing them out. PODS has provided containers for the students to drop off their clothing, household good and furniture around campus and the Logan neighborhood.

Everything in the PODS will be donated to Catholic Charities of Spokane to help low-income and homeless families in the area.

"We make charitable work a priority at PODS and ZAGiving is a great way for college students to help give back," said David Henry, territory manager for PODS of Spokane. "We are honored to be providing our moving and storage services to help collect items for our community members who are less fortunate."

The PODS will be available May 8th-14th, just in time for graduation. Students who want to drop off goods should bag them up and and bring them to ZAGiving drop off spots marked with banners around campus.

High Tea is almost ready on the South Hill

High Tea is almost ready on the South Hill

A mother-daughter team is about the bring the Victorian era back to Spokane's South Hill one cup of tea at a time. Silver Spoon Tea House plans on opening by the start of June and the historic setting will take you back to the time of white gloves and calling cards.

Sylvia Erickson bought the former home of Spokane business pioneer Levi Monroe in October and has been working with her daughter, Lara McHenry, to bring their dream of a tea house to life. The home is listed on the National Historical Registry and has been under renovation for the last few years.

“It was too perfect to pass up,” says Erickson. She explains that so many homes from that time period have been divided into apartments and commercial spaces. This house was perfect for High Tea.
