Red wagon closure only temporary |

If you've seen the fences surrounding Spokane's iconic Red Wagon in recent days, don't worry - the fences are just temporary.
The parks department closes off the wagon from time to time to make repairs and clean up graffiti. Right now, it's closed for annual cleanup and maintenance and should be back open by the end of the week.
It's not the first time the wagon has been closed this year, though, and it's part of a list of properties the park board will discuss at its regular meeting tomorrow. The parks board will discuss whether or not the city has seen more vandalism in the parks than usual this year.
Parks staff kept busy this summer with several major incidents of vandalism. In addition to tagging on the wagon, staffers spent several hours on multiple occasions taking down picnic tables stacked into pyramids. The city also showed us surveillance video from the Dwight Merkel Sports Complex, the site of repeated vandalism and mischief.
The city parks staff says cleaning up vandalism is frustrating, but it comes with having public parks. After Thursday's park board meeting, the staff could break into a study session to determine if further action needs to be taken to protect these public resources.
