Visit Spokane recognized for use of social media | Business
Visit Spokane is being recognized for the innovative way it’s using social media to promote tourism in the city. Skift.com has listed Visit Spokane as one of only 11 destination marketing organizations in the world taking advantage of Twitter to reach tourists.
According to Skift.com local tourism boards “have an enormous opportunity to make themselves matter to everyday travels via social media, but few are taking advantage of it.”
The relatively new tourism website looked at how many times tourism organizations were tweeting a day and at how quickly they responded to tweets. Visit Spokane and Visit Seattle both made the list of 11 that also included Explore Georgia and Visit Melbourne.
“We created the social media staff position a couple of years ago, and clearly it’s paying off,” said Tim Robinson, Director of Communication and PR for Visit Spokane.
Visit Spokane currently operates two Twitter handles, @VisitSpokane and @MeetSpokane. With over 7,000 followers, @VisitSpokane tweets about shopping, activities and events going on in and around the Spokane area. Opened more recently, @MeetSpokane tweets information about conventions and meetings happening in the city as well as fun meeting ideas to woo potential conventions.
“Peyton Scheller, Visit Spokane’s Communications Coordinator, is to be applauded for her singular role in leading this effort,” said Robinson, adding that tourism is Washington’s fourth largest industry.
