River Park Square opens new public patio | Business
There’s a new place to sip an iced coffee with friends on warm summer day thanks to River Park Square. The shopping mall opened a public patio on Thursday in an effort to meet the need for more gathering spots downtown.
“We really hope that it will activate downtown,” said River Park Square General Manager Bryn West. She came up with the idea for the patio after hearing a speaker at an event talking about how to utilize spaces already available. West thought it would be a great idea to turn the large front entrance of River Park Square in a public patio.
“I thought, ‘What a great untapped opportunity’,” explained West.
While there are many downtown restaurants with patio space, there aren’t any patios where people can just hang out.
“We just want people to hang out and have fun,” said Marketing Director Elizabeth Mills.
West and Mills said they hope people grab a latte from inside, bring down lunch from the food court, or hold meetings at the patio for meetings. The patio is meant to be a public space for everyone to enjoy the summer sun.
The River Park Square patio will be open until October and will follow the same hours as the mall, closing around 9 pm each night. West is particularly excited for the patio heaters that will be out when the sun goes down.
“The visual at night is going to be awesome,” said West. “We just hope people come out and enjoy.”
