Epic beards benefit Spokane Guild School | Community Spirit
Saturday night will be all about facial hair as the Spokane Beard and Mustache Foundation presents the 2nd Annual Epic Beard Competition. Whether you like a full beard, crafty mustache, or shorter facial locks, all will be on display to benefit the Spokane Guild School.
Last year's inaugural Epic Beard Competition featured 40 beardsmen showing off their perfectly groomed and styled facial hair. The event brought in $7,500 for the Vet's Garage, and this year members of the Spokane Beard Foundation decided to use their beards to help out the Spokane Guild School.
On Saturday night, beardsmen will flood The Vault to compete in six categories. Awards will be handed out for mustache, partial beard, full beard under six inches, freestyle, natural beard over six inches and the all female category whiskerinas. While there are only a handful of beards signed up now, but Spokane Beard and Mustache President Eric Bandholz is confident they will have just as many competitors as last year.
Bandholz said the most popular category for beardsmen is the full beard category, while spectators tend to enjoy to the crazy sculpted locks in the freestyle competition. Beards are judged by a panel of judges on a scale of one to 10, and showmanship is very much factored into the score.
Spectators can get in on the game by using dollar bills to cast their vote for fan favorite. The beard that pulls in the most money will receive a special trophy being made by the owner of The Vault.
The Spokane Beard and Mustache Foundation is in the process of becoming a 501c3 non-profit organization. Secretary Kayle Wischer said all the paper work has been filed and they are waiting for the final stamp of approval. The group has dedicated the entire year to fundraising for the Guild School.
