Bing Crosby house throws 100th Birthday Party | Community Spirit
Before he became an American icon, Bing Crosby was just a kid from Spokane who could sing. Bing grew up on the edge of the Gonzaga University campus and the home where he fell in love music will celebrate 100 years on Saturday. Gonzaga is throwing the house a birthday party and has invited to community to attend and learn more about Spokane’s favorite son.
Bing Crosby was born in 1903 and the Crosby family moved into the house at 508 E. Sharp Avenue in 1913. Bing’s father designed the Craftsman-style home and built it with two of Bing’s uncles. Music was ever present in the home, and the Crosby family purchased one of the first phonographs in Spokane.
Bing grew up in the neighborhood around Gonzaga University and was two months shy of graduating from the GU School of Law when he left Spokane for Hollywood in 1925. It only took Bing a year to make it big, and he went on to not only record timeless songs and star in film favorites, but he also changed the recording and radio business. You can read more about Bing’s career HERE.
Over the years, Gonzaga expanded around the Crosby family home, and in 1980 the Alumni Association purchased the home. The home now houses the Office of Sponsored Research and Programs as well as some faculty offices. A few modifications have been made to the home in the years that Gonzaga has owned it. A handicap ramp was added and an upstairs bathroom was removed. The kitchen was remodeled and new siding has been added.
While the house is open on a daily basis, the rooms are used as offices so the public is not able to explore it. On Saturday, the rooms will be open and members of The Advocates for the Bing Crosby Theater will be at the open house to answer questions about Bing Crosby and the growth and preservation of the Bing Crosby Theater in Downtown Spokane. In traditional birthday fashion there will be cake available at the celebration.
