Mayor of Limerick visits Spokane | Community Spirit
The mayor of Limerick, Ireland, one of Spokane’s Sister Cities, is touring the Lilac City. Mayor Kathleen Leddin is the 817th mayor of Limerick and on Monday she stopped by the site of the Sister Cities Garden Project at Riverfront Park.
“I’m very excited about it,” Mayor Leddin said of her trip. “There’s a great Sister City relationship between Limerick and Spokane.”
Mayor Leddin spent Sunday having brunch in Coeur d’Alene and then toured Spokane wineries as part of Spring Release weekend. She said Riverfront Park has been her favorite part of the trip.
“I think the trees and the whole ambiance of the place, the comfort of people sitting around and casualness of it,” explained Mayor Leddin. “This is a very comfortable and casual place.”
Each of Spokane’s Sister Cities will be represented by a sculpture in the Sister Cities Garden, and part of Leddin’s trip was to discuss what the Limerick Sculpture might look like. Limerick is hoping to include some of it’s own artists in the project and possible ideas include a leprechaun or a replica of the Limerick Treaty Stone.
A delegation from Spokane that included Mayor David Condon, members of the Lilac Festival court and members of the Spokane-Limerick Sister City board were at the Limerick City Council meeting last June when Leddin was elected as mayor. As the 817th Mayor of Limerick, Leddin is also the last. The City of Limerick is merging with the county this year, creating a single Limerick Municipal area.
Despite the changes in Limerick’s government, Leddin would like to see the Sister City relationship continue to grow.
“It’s quite active as it is,” Leddin said about the Sister City program. “I think we need something more concrete.”
Leddin would like to see more Spokanites visiting Limerick, and would also like to see a commerce relationship in addition to the cultural exchange. A Spokane delegation will visit Limerick next year as the town dedicates the Spokane Walk along the River Shannon.
Mayor Condon will host a reception for Mayor Leddin before introducing her at the Spokane City Council Meeting on Monday evening. An official dinner at Gonzaga University will follow.
