Gonzaga rapper releases song for streaking team | Community Spirit
The great Kanye West once said, “I guess every superhero needs his theme music,” and it appears the Gonzaga basketball teams now have theirs.
Marc P, a rapper and senior at Gonzaga, released “Work Hard, Play Hard (Zag Remix)” last week on the heels of Gonzaga's men's team earning its second appearance in the top-3 of the USA Today Coaches Poll.
"Hip-hop culture isn't really represented when you see the crowd shots from GU games,” Marc P said. “But the students love the music, and anyone who has ever seen Gonzaga knows they're crazy about the team. I just wanted to rep my school the only way I really know how.”
Marc P – or Marcus Parker – was drawn to Gonzaga because of his relationship with former Zag fan-favorite Ira Brown.
“My big bro (Brown) was my inspiration to want to do more with my life, so I followed him here not just to see what the world can offer me, but what I can offer the world,” Parker said.
Parker hopes the song will be the rallying cry for both men's and women's teams as he notes both squads in his lyrics. Both men and women face rival Saint Mary's on Thursday evening – the men in Moraga, Calif., and the women in the Kennel in Spokane.
“I had to get it out in time for this game,” Parker said, adding he hopes to perform the song during or after a game in the near future.
Give the song a listen at Marc P's Soundcloud page, and tell us what you think in the comments. (Note: some of Parker's other songs contain explicit lyrics, but the Zag remix is clean.)
