SNAP utilizes Groupon to raise awareness, donations | Families
SNAP and Groupon are teaming up to make donating easier than ever.
For the first time, SNAP has been featured on the money-saving service's website and in their daily emails. For just $12, you can donate a housewarming kit for families transitioning out of homelessness.
“Donations provide housewarming kits with cleaning supplies for families transitioning from homelessness to permanent housing,” the Groupon's “In a Nutshell” blurb reads.
The listing is a part of Groupon's Grassroots operation, which SNAP spokesperson Tricia Ovincek described as Groupon's “do-good arm.”
The listing was launched Friday and will be open until Wednesday at midnight. The project had a goal of selling 30 packages: As of Monday at noon, it had sold over 150.
The success the venture has had in regards to donations wasn't the main goal, according to Ovincek.
“It's been a great way for us to raise awareness about SNAP,” she said. “We have about 30 different programs and a lot of people don't know that.”
Ovincek said she hopes that the visibility Groupon allows will help people throughout the Spokane area realize that SNAP is doing legitimate good in the community – beyond just heating homes.
“We do help people buy their first homes, start their first businesses,” Ovincek said. “We're just looking for new ways to share the SNAP story – that there is probably something we can do to help you find new opportunities in your life, and Groupon has been a great way for us to do that.”
